Are interest rates on the rise?
The Latest Predictions On An Interest Rate Rise
June 16, 2016 | by Ellen
A few weeks ago the rumors were that an interest rate increase would happen possibly as soon as June or July, but then the disappointing jobs report was released and speculation grew that the Feds would wait a while longer before putting them up again. Fed Chair Janet Yellen gave a speech last week, which you can see in this video, stating that the overall outlook for the economy was strong and that rate increases would be likely to stay in line with their 2% objective for inflation. She didn’t offer much by way of when the increases could come, however.
Regarding the jobs report and the sudden decrease in the number of people who were employed last month, it is important to note that was strongly influenced by the widespread Verizon strike which took about 35,000 people off the payrolls during the survey period. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics alludes to it in their report.
RISMedia has a report on how many experts believe June is out of the running for an increase, and many sources suggest July could still be a possibility. If not July, then September would be the next opportunity.
